‘There won’t be a second Asha Bhonsle’

There won’t be a second Asha Bhonsle’
By Sreya Basu (IBNS)
Asha Bhonsle It’s after 15 long years that Asha Bhonsle is back with her new Bengali album ‘Mone Rekho’ on occasion of Durga Puja. The Queen of Melodies in conversation with India Blooms correspondent Sreya Basu
Why did you suddenly decide to come up with a Puja album after 15 years?
I have sung many Bengali songs with veterans like Manna Dey, for music directors like Nachiketa Ghosh, Hemantdada (Mukhopadhyay). But Puja albums have their special significance…it’s festive time and Bengalis really look forward for something special from us singers. The first Puja album I recorded was for RD (Burman). Songs like ‘Jabo Ki Jabo Na’ and ‘Chokhe Choke Kotha Bolo’ became overnight hits…all copies were sold out, and I was forced to give a silver disc to HMV (smiles). After that, Pancha
m and I decided to do aPuja album every year…and all became hits. And then, one day, Pancham passed away and I decided not to do any Puja album…
Why?
Because, first, I didn’t feel like doing an album without Pancham, and then, I knew it won’t be possible to recreate our combination. But God gives time for every thing. One fine morning, I asked Babul (Bose) to compose eightPuja songs. He didn’t believe me at first…and then asked: ‘Where do you want to record it? I was supposed to
record for my friend Mahua Lahiri years back…she even set up Asha Audio (after my name) for that…but the project never happened. So it was my payback time. We recorded six songs within eight days. Then I had to go to America; but I returned as soon as possible to record the remaining two songs. Then, they got busy in…what do you call that ‘awaaz bigarne ko’?….mixing. Besides, this is the first time I am featuring in a Bengali music video. The song ‘Dingulo Bhola Gelo Na’ was shot mostly in RD’ s music room in Mumbai.
So ‘Mone Rekho’ (Remember Me) is a tribute to RD Burman?
Yes, you can say that. While recording the songs I felt Pancham is sitting somewhere near me and listening to my songs. Babul also realized that Pancham’s presence is necessary for me and thealbum. But for that he didn’t have to steal RD’s music (pointing to her smiling face on the album cover, said: Photo jaisi lag rahi hu?Bees saal purana photo hai!).
You are at 37th position in the latest World Music list. Your comments.
I just heard it from you…and am happy. But you know what, I am scared for the new generation of singers. I have sung so many songs…I am 75, how many more will I sing? But what will the new generation do? Now-a-days, no record company is ready to release new albums in face of piracy and internet downloading. What will happen to the new singers…will they stop singing if they don’t get films! If you do stage shows, you get money, but in the process, the shouting takes a toll on your voice. We seriously need to stop this piracy thing or else the singers will be in deep trouble.
But the new talents get platform at reality shows…
Now-a-days we can pick and bring anyone at reality shows…the Boogie Woogie types. Say, for three months the person stays 24×7 in front of public eye, he gets his two minute fame. But what happens after the show is over? The ‘saas bahu’ serial (Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) went for years…people got addicted to it. But now that the serial has gone off air, who remembers it?
You have reigned for decades, you have seen the changing times. Why do you think, we don’t get soothing melodies like ‘Paan khaye saiyaan humaro’ now-a-days?
The films have changed totally….let aside the songs. Name a recent film where you can spot a soothing village scene or find an innocent ‘Gaon ki chhori’ singing love tunes for her beloved! Sorry to say, there is hardly a sensible music director or a lyricist around at present. See what sort of film titles we have?…’Kaminey’ …can’t even differentiate if it’s a film or an abuse. Earlier, the ‘mahaul’ was something else…Uttambabu (actor Uttam Kumar) stage pea ate the, toh hum mar jaate the jawani mein. Now it’s all about ‘cheekhna chillana’. We only get dance songs without situations in films.
So, you do miss Pancham now?
Why only Pancham…I miss Kishore (Kumar), Rafi , Latadididi (Mangeshkar)…everyone…those times were different. We used to have so much fun at recordings…if I start telling you it will take at least four days to complete. I used to teach Hindi tom Pancham. But he never taught me Bengali…I learnt the language by listening to RD converse with his Bengali friends like Kishore in-between recordings. Now-a-days I don’t feel like singing in films. And as it is, there won’t be a second Asha.
With whom did you enjoy singing duets most?
Latadidi…because there was always this challenge within that ‘kuch karna hi hai’ (I have to do something special).
Even today, there is a Lata-Asha comparison…
That comparison is unavoidable because we are sisters. And since I am the younger one, people will tend to compare my singing with her. Had I been from outside the family, these things could have been avoided.
Are you planning a second Bengali album?
Yes, I will come up with a Rabindrasangeet album next year for Asha Audio.
Is there anything more that you want to achieve in life?
What I want is not important, what happens, is. I have never planned life because it is not necessary that what I fix, will be fulfilled. My life has taken me from one place to another…an ordinary woman like me has got name, fame, RD, family, children, grandchildren, respect…what else can I want. But given a choice, I have twin grandsons…I want to dance at their weddings.
Any plans for your birthday on Sept 8?
No plans yet (smiles).

ASHA BHOSLE struggled with dreams of making it Big

When Asha Bhonsle struggled with dreams of making it big
Mumbai, Sept. 9 (PTI): Asha Bhonsle is now one of the most revered singers in the country, but behind the success of that magical voice is the story of a struggle for survival and the desperation to get out of the mire of poverty.
The singer, who turned 74 yesterday, revealed her early days of struggle in a candid speech to a packed audience that gathered here to felicitate her on the occasion.
“My husband had a salary of merely Rs 100 and we stayed in a small one-room tenament in the northern-most suburb of Borivali. Only I know how I have struggled in those years,” Asha, daughter of noted Marathi artiste Dinanath Mangeshkar and Lata Mangeshkar’s younger sister, said.
“I used to travel in crowded local trains across Mumbai from one rehearsal to another, one recording to the other with my small child in tow. But throughout that difficult period, there was a perseverance, a belief in myself that I had to get out of this mire of poverty and give my children a better life.”
In an emotional speech, Asha recounted how many critics panned her for singing cabaret songs and not doing “serious work”.
“I never thought about what kind of songs I wanted to sing. I sang anything that came my way because to me, my children’s education and future was very important,” noted Asha, who is now recognised for her versatility.
Asha also dwelt on her failed marriage to Ganpatrao Bhonsle, whom she eloped with as a 16-year-old, saying, “I believed that one could survive on love and fresh air but of course, that is only possible in films. In real life, when poverty hits you, it is very difficult to cope but I’m someone who has learnt to laugh through all the troubles.”
All of life’s tough lessons taught Asha that no human being should be looked down upon.
“It is because I have gone through so much that even today I still have respect for every human being, no matter from which strata of society they are. My children do not like it when I speak to my watchman or the gardener but I tell them that that is the way I am,” she said.
The singer was earlier felicitated by veteran music directors Yashwant Deo and Khayyam and Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray.
Speaking on the occasion, Thackeray said Asha deserved to be felicitated on a bigger platform. “We have our first Marathi president now and I think it would appropriate if you are felicitated at her (Pratibha Patil’s) hands.
“We will definitely make a case for it and let us hope that all those votes we have given her are of at least some use,” he said.
In her speech, Asha said she was recording a classical album with Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and that she would now concentrate on classical and Marathi folk songs.

    Life
Asha was born on September 8, 1933 in a small village of Goar in Sangli, Maharashtra to the Marathi family. She is the daughter of Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar, who was a theater artist as well as a classical singer. She lost her father, when she only nine years old. The family kept moving from one place to another. They went from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Bombay (now Mumbai). To support the family, she and her elder sister Lata started singing in the films. To know the complete life history of Asha Bhonsle, read on.
She got her first break when she signed the agreement to sing the song “Chala Chala Nav Bala” for the Marathi movie Majha Bal (1943). Her first Hindi song was “Saawan aaya”, which was recorded for Hansraj Behl’s film Chunariya (1948). When she was sixteen, she fell in love with a 31-year old man Ganpatrao Bhosle and she was firm about marrying him. She eloped with him and tied her wedding knots with him against the wishes of her family. She did not derive happiness in this relationship and after a few years, she shifted to her mother’s home along with her kids.
She is one of the most skilled and talented singers. Her music repertoire consists of film music, ghazals, pop, traditional Indian Classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, bhajans, and Rabindra Sangeet. She has sung songs in fourteen languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, English, Russian and Malay. She has sung nearly 12,000 songs.
Though, she has made a vast collection of music, but she is most famous for the Bollywood songs. She headed her first step towards establishing her career in the year 1943. She has been the most prominent personality of the Indian music industry since the last six decades. She has done playback singing for more than 950 Bollywood movies.
    Career
Initially, Asha had to struggle a lot to get assignments to sing for the lead roles. However, during the 1950s, she sang a large number of songs. Infact, period she sung more than any other playback singer. Her initial songs were mainly composed by Sajjad Hussain, A R Qureshi and Ghulam Mohammed. Thereafter, she got plenty of singing assignments.
Apart from Hindi songs, she also sang for many Marathi movies such as Khedyamadhle ghar kaularu, Majha hoshil Kaa? Bugadi mazi and Nach re mora. Her Marathi bhajans, natyageet and bhav-geet are liked by people even today. O.P. Nayyar gave a boost to her career by giving her a major break in C.I.D. (1956). Asha’s performance in the film Teesri Manzil was well acclaimed. In the film, she worked along with R.D.Burman. Thereafter, they worked together in quite a number of films and also decided to tie wedding knots with each other. Their collaboration earned them name and fame.
During 1960s and 1970s, she became the voice of the most famous dancer of Bollywood Helen. Popular Asha Bhosle-Helen numbers include Piya tu ab to aaja (Caravan), O Haseena Zulfon Wali (Teesri Manzil) and Yeh Mera Dil (Don). She took up the challenge of showing her versatility by taking up the challenge of singing Ghazals in the films Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijazat (1987). Her work was widely applauded.
During the 1990s Asha experimented with the remixed versions of R.D. Burman songs. Her efforts were criticized by many people, accusing her for tampering with the golden melodies of the past. Nevertheless, there were albums like “Rahul And I”, which were appreciated by people. In the year 1997, Asha came out with her private Indipop album Janam Samjha Karo, which was a major hit. The album brought her great honor and recognition. She even received the 1997 MTV Award.
